Our Christmas Eve Eve

‘Twas Christmas Eve Eve and all through the car,

Only one little creature was stirring as we drove home afar.

Our oldest it was who talks quite a lot,

And with the car TV broken, a chat is what he sought.

We talked about presents as he had already opened a ton.

We laughed and agreed we had all had some great fun.

But the conversation got deep, and I’m not sure how it did;

Much deeper than I was prepared to have with a kid.

He started by asking about each sibling he has,

And I shared something my heart had learned of years ago on a Christmas.

He has a big sister, and Faith is her name.

But she’s not here in person, and that’s definitely quite a shame.

I kept it brief for understanding is tough,

Why she isn’t here to wrestle and be rough.

He asked, though, about her and if she was dead.

I had opened a box of secrets with what I had said.

I told him she’s alive just not here with us,

That she’s in heaven we know in our hearts and we trust.

She’s waiting for us when we will join her one day.

She’s waiting to jump on the clouds and with us she will play.

That appeased him for a bit so our chat turned to Him;

The person we celebrate who means more than the Christmas trees we trim.

“Is Jesus dead too?” he asked with such thought.

“No, my sweet boy. He’s alive in our hearts. He’s a present that’s not bought.”

“But He died for us, right?” He tried to make sense of it all.

“He died on the cross because He loved us, us all.”

“Why?” he asked. “Would he do such a thing?”

“Because he wanted to prove to us heaven and that He is our King.”

“But dead He is not and I promise you that.

He lives deep within us.” And with that he just sat.

His brain constantly thinking and His age he asked next.

“His birthday was thousands of years ago at best.”

Maybe he got it or maybe he did not.

But the topic of talk turned to counting a lot.

He couldn’t count that high but close he sure tried.

Over a hundred was enough as home we arrived.

So I leave you with this, dear friends this season.

Always know why we gather together, and never forget the reason.

Because a sweet little soul may question it too.

And you know the answer. It’s deep within you.

Presents are nice and family is great.

But never forget He taught love and not hate.

To share with the world the birth of our Lord.

He’s actually a present that’s something we all can afford.

Praise to Him for loving us too.

He loves us all, the many and the few.

Never fear for He’s always within sight.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a blessed life.
